Book: The Stranger

I was in 8th grade when my English teacher Mr. Balkaran told me I should read this book. It was a hot summer day and I preferred to stay inside in the lunch room reading. See, back then our playground was nothing but an empty concrete lot. In the summer we were just looking for shade to hide from the sun. So, I stayed in and did some reading. I wasn't crazy about the end of the book.  But I became a fan of Caroline B Cooney.  It helped me find me a little better when it came to writing.

Excerpt: My Mother's Boyfriend

The city of Jacksonville looked so small from the plane. I couldn’t believe I had lived there all my life and I still didn’t know half the place. I had spent all of my summers traveling to New York to visit my father. Then a month before school started I came back to Jacksonville. But this year it was going to be different because it was my last year studying here and my dad offered me a job in his company. He had built a photography studio and he wanted me to help him run it. Welcome to Jacksonville flight 890 I know most of you are sleeping since it’s 3 AM but it’s a beautiful night. Thank you for flying with Serene Airlines we have arrived at our destination. Enjoy your stay! I grabbed my bag and walked over to the luggage claim. “Welcome to Jacksonville, can I see your passport?” “Yes.” I pulled my passport from my bag and handed it to guy behind the window. I never understood why they had to check flights when they came into the airport. Obviously I had to have paid and h...

Him

“HIM” You really can't help who you like.  It's an attraction that you feel and is impossible to ignore it; especially when it's all you crave. I don't like that I like him.  It's also true that I can't help but to like him.  I don't like the way people talk about him. They want him to fail. They don't want him to be successful. I get it, but he is human. We all have been there before. We are not God, we can't judge. Still, all the negativity can't keep me away from him. Every time I hear his voice is like I'm in another world. A smile forms on my lips. He is all I can see. I'm so attracted to him. There is something that keeps pulling me to him. I just can't quite figure it out. Maybe is his attitude about life  or the way he smiles all the time. Probably, is the way he keeps on fighting when everyone is against him. I like that he is real. He doesn't hide his true self. He ...

Excerpt: Believing in Something, Chapter Three

“When did you drop him off at school?” Alexandra was sitting in her office, behind her desk, with a notepad at hand and a disturbing image in her head. A child had gone missing and she could only imagine how frightened the child must be feeling. “I dropped my son off at school at around...7:45 or so?” The mother nervously answered. HEr eyes were red and she had bags under her eyes. “Gosh, do you think we’ll find him? I…” “Mrs. Cane, I’m sure we’ll find Jake. I need you to work with me. Did you see anything weird? Maybe someone out of place that you’ve never seen before?” “No...I...I don’t remember. I wish I did...I...I was rushing to work. I didn’t bother to look around because I figured Jake would come home safe like he always did.” “It’s okay Mrs. Cane. It’s not your fault. I’m just trying to figure out what happened that day in school. Maybe an event or something that doesn’t fit into the routine. When did you notice Jake was missing?” “I came home at 5 pm. He wasn’t home...
