Excerpt: Gambled Wife

“It’s all about how you do it and who you do it with.” Diane went on to say. “To cheat, you must be a very intelligent woman. You can’t just cheat with anyone. You must cheat with someone you know that you can trust. It can’t be someone who hates your husband because he’ll tell him just to see him mad. It can’t be a friend of your husband or the family because then he’ll tell out of guilt. It has to be with someone that simply doesn’t care. He just wants sex.”

“He must have nothing to gain and nothing to lose.” Riley added.

Alexandra served herself some coffee and listen attentively at the conversation. Emily Hunt, her best friend, listened as well. But by the look on her face you could tell she wasn’t pleased with the conversation. Jenny Saint on the other hand, was interested in finding a lover and was writing the tips down on a notebook she carried with her everywhere.

“Now, I met this boy at the market…” Jenny bit on her lower lip. “Good or bad?”

“Good.” Diane and Riley answered almost simultaneously.

“If you think about it.” Diane took a sip from her coffee before answering. “A boy from the market has no connection with your husband. Who is he going to tell?”

I cleared my throat. “On the other hand, he could want money. What if he then blackmails you?”

Emily laughed at the look on Jenny’s face. “You look like a dear caught in headlights.”

“Really funny.” Jenny rolled her eyes.

“Already practicing for that moment when your husband comes home and finds you with market boy in bed.”

“Emily stop it!” Diane scolded. “What is it with you?

But Emily’s laughter just got louder. She threw herself on Alexandra who couldn’t help but laugh. Emily’s laugh was quite contagious.

Riley rolled her eyes. “Just because you have the perfect husband doesn’t mean you can judge the rest of us.”

“Let’s not fight.” Alexandra said as she pushed her best friend to the side. “Now…” She waited for Emily to calm down. “Let’s talk about something else, why don’t we play cards or something?”

Emily did have a good husband. Jonas loved her very much and had moved from Paris to New York just for her.

“My husband is not perfect, we argue sometimes and I kick him out of the room. But I’m not going to cheat on him because we had some disagreements. I don’t think you should cheat Jenny. Joseph loves you, doesn’t he?” Emily walked over to Jenny and sat next to her on the couch. “Well?”

I Let Go

When I commit to something, I like to see it through.  I work hard to see it through.   I ignore the signs and I keep pushing even when there's nothing worth fighting for. This year though, I am learning to let go of everything; I mean people, I mean situations, feelings, and anything that doesn't serve me. And I grieve all of this but in a healthy way.  I allow time to be my friend. I give myself words of encouragement. I give my body, food, vitamins, and exercise. I give my brain meditation and therapy. I read. I cry, I talk to my sister, and my friends. I Let Go. It's the best thing I could've done for myself. At the end of the day, is it really worth forcing something that's not meant to be for you?

A Lost Story #NationalNovelWritingMonth2024

I watched a love story, a telenovela, many years ago.  I was maybe between the ages of 5-7 when they played it on TV. Something about that telenovela has lived forever in my mind. I thought that maybe with technology advancing we could see the story again. After years of waiting, I found the director (I love the power of the internet) and he gave me the terrible news that...unfortunately, the story was lost forever.  I may not be able to watch it again, but I would like to write it down in my own words. This is my project for the rest of 2024 and part of NANO WRIMO 2024. What are you writing about for the month of November?
